Hi, I'm Elisa All with PregnancyToday. I have with me Veronica del Real a nurse practitioner who's going to talk to us about eating healthy for two during pregnancy and we are also going to make a wonderful snack that is high in nutrients and that is really pretty and delicious to eat too. Welcome. Thank you. Thanks for being with us. So Veronica when I was pregnant I remember thinking the term eating for two meant I had a license to eat twice as much is that true? No, its not true although there is somebody else on board it isn't eating for two it's only a few more calories a day which pretty much involves a healthy snack a day. First trimester about a 100 – 200 calories extra a day and then second and third trimesters are about 300 – 500 extra calories a day. Can you tell us what the key nutrients are we are going to be talking about? One of the most important nutrients in pregnancy with help with the skeletal development of the baby is calcium and vitamin d. Good sources of calcium milk yogurts cheeses kind of dairy products. Vitamin D tends to help of the absorption of calcium in the body so then it helps with the growing of the bones for the baby and a lot of the vitamin d sources are fortified foods and sunlight if you can believe it. So can you take us through what might be a healthy day of eating at breakfast lunch and dinner. Sure here we have for breakfast some milk of course with some fortified cereal which gets a lot of nutrients in that maybe with a pumpkin muffin on the side. For lunch we have a nice a nice healthy turkey and cheese sandwich here and of course you add your veggies by maybe adding some tomatoes and lettuce to the sandwich we have carrots on the side and also fruit on the side so you can kind of get all your nutrients there. And then for dinner we have a nice salmon which is a good source of vitamin d and then we have some vegetables some broccoli and some potatoes there.
Now keeping in mind that you said a pregnant woman needs about 300-500 extra calories later in her pregnancy is there a snack that is a good way to do that? So we've got this yogurt parfait here that we can create together. Yes. So it looks like its yogurt granola and fruit. Correct – okay excellent. Get a scoop here and try it out. So then what comes next. Put some fruit in here, so we will throw some fruit in next make a nice layer. And im going to steal one of these they look so good. And then we are going to top it off with some granola make another layer and be generous. Okay the granola gives it that crunch its one of my favorite things also. And now I am going to go with another layer of yogurt. This looks really good and you know what I want to put on top of mine afterwards is a dollop of vanilla because Im going to trick myself into thinking it's whip cream. How's that. Good, looks good. Okay and then lets give it a taste if you don't mind because I'm really excited. Very good. So good, its crunchy and its creamy its really delicious and I love the fact that its healthy.
