Hi, I'm Jamie Davis and I'm a registered dietitian. I have some helpers with me today, thanks for helping me out you guys. We've got four beverages on the table. I want you to point out which one is your favorite.
Alright, now point to the one you think has the most amount of sugar in it.
Okay, now we're going to play a little game and figure out if you guys are right.
Do you guys know how to read a label? Okay, I want you to pay close attention to the grams of sugar okay? You're going to take the grams of sugar and divide it by four. Four grams of sugar equals one teaspoon, and each one of these little cubes represent one teaspoon, okay? So we pre-calculated the amount of sugar in each of these beverages. Alright, let's see what that looks like. Why don't you guys put the sugar on your plates?
Sophie, you have the most sugar cubes. How long do you think it would take you to drink that versus eat all these?
Well, it would take me about fifteen minutes to drink this, but I would not want to eat those sugar cubes.
Yeah I bet you didn't realize that there was that much sugar in that drink did you?
There's a lot of sugar in these drinks that you don't ever see or think about, so something you might try is drinking more water or drinking these drinks in moderation. So, here's a tip for you, if your kids complain because they don't like water, you can always cut up some oranges, cucumbers, and lemons for a nice refreshing drink.
