Hi, I'm Elisa All with PregnancyToday. I'm here with Dr. Shayna Hollingsworth-Mancuso an OB-GYN who's going to talk to us about signs and symptoms of pregnancy and managing morning sickness. Hi Shayna – Hi – how are you? – Great. Good I have to point out you are expecting yourself right? Yes – alright great, well I hope you can help us answer today one the most important question an expecting mom has which is how will I know i'm pregnant. Well keep in mind that every woman's body is unique and every woman reacts differently to pregnancy but there are plenty of common signs that most women will experience. There will be nausea and vomiting extreme nausea, which I experienced in the beginning. Extreme fatigue is another one and also indigestion and acid reflux is a common sign. And some women will feel more irritable or just more emotional than usual. I think that morning sickness a lot of women hone in on that one because its just so dramatic and will affect you for me at least morning noon and night is that common. Its very common morning sickness occurs sometimes throughout the day in a lot of women and many women have a genetic pre disposition to morning sickness and others don't experience it at all. There are many tips that we can give to kind of alleviate some of the stresses of morning sickness. My favorite is before even getting out of bed in the morning I always advise expecting moms to eat crackers with a little salt dry toast. And then focus on having 6 to 8 small meals throughout the day, minimize that empty stomach and also avoid spicy foods in the beginning and I find it very helpful to keep hydrated throughout the day especially cold fluids, cold fluids seem to help with ice. Absolutely, I found that turkey sandwiches and a tall glass of ice lemonade was my best friend during my first trimester. Yes the lemonade ice cool citrus. Well speaking of drinks we have a delicious recipe for a smoothie that you get to drink. It gives us key nutrients as well as helping us manage morning sickness. So lets go ahead and make one I should put ice in the blender already – yes. Here's some milk preferably vitamin d refreshing now our bananas potassium and folate and some strawberries vitamin c and calcium natural sugars. And then some protein powder just to get that protein requirement that pregnant women need. I'm excited. I know – me too. Okay here we go, some for you – thank you. And I am going to drink this too cheers – cheers. Really good – it's delicious. I feel like it's so healthy so well we're going to keep drinking here thank you for joining us it was great to have you and we will see you next time on pregnancy today.
