Hi I'm Elisa All with Babies Today. I am here with Dr. Anita Chandra, a pediatrician, and baby Paige. And we are going to be talking about newborn baby basics. I remember as a new parent sort of feeling sort of overwhelmed and surprised by the umbilical cord. Can you tell us a little about the umbilical cord? Sure. What you see on your baby is actually just the stump of the cord that brought nutrients from you to your baby. And there is nothing really to be afraid of, it's just a scab. It will dry up and fall off like other scabs do. You just want to make sure you keep the area clean. Some people will tell you to just wipe it off once a day with rubbing alcohol. Others will just tell you to just leave it alone and watch for infection. OK. The key is when you are bathing your baby, initially, you don't want to put the baby in water when they still have their cord on. You just want to do a sponge bathe around the cord. Once the cord comes off you can actually do a full-fledged bath. Any precautions to take with it? Things to wear? Not wear? It's nice to find kimono style tops to put the baby in as opposed to a one piece that may chaff against the cord. Additionally, you can roll the top of the diaper down so it doesn't rub against the cord over and over again. When the scab does come off don't be afraid if there are drops of blood that you see anywhere because it's just a scab that's dried and come off. If it's not actively bleeding it's ok. That's great to know. The next thing I remember being a little confounded by was baby's nails. Obviously the hands are so tiny the nails were so small I was worried I was going to hurt the baby when I clipped the nails. So, I'm wondering if you can show us the right way to do it. Sure. Ok, so what's the best way to do this? So you want to be comfortable and make sure you're holding on to her finger or hand firmly. Not to hurt her, but firmly not to hurt her when you clip her nails. OK. You end up clipping a baby's nails maybe one to two times a week because they do grow very fast. They're sharp so they can scratch them. Hold there nails firmly and put the nail clippers there. And just clip straight across. You never want to cut lower than the fingertip itself. OK. I think I've got it. Good. You just go through and do all of them that way. Another tip sometimes is to actually use a nail file if you feel very uncomfortable you can just file the nails across a little bit. OK. That's great to know. Wonderful. OK. Well the third thing I want to talk about, seems like a no-brainer, but sometimes can be confusing to new parents, is just diapering the baby. Can you show us the right way to do this so were treating baby just the right way. Sure. Well we have Paige on a changing pad that we've actually laid down on the ground here. When I had newborn babies I use to actually change my babies on the ground just as well I felt comfortable and safe. If you put the changing pad on a table higher up you want to make sure you've got it secured safely to the table and that you are watching your baby on the pad. Never turn your back to the baby. Right. Then I like to have whatever I am going to use handy. I've got diapers and wipes. I think I've got my diaper here. Perfect. I've got my wipes. Perfect. Always for girls wiping front to back? Right. For girls you always want to make sure you wipe from front to back. So you can use your old diaper there to just wipe away a bit. And then take your wipe and wipe from front to back. Just like that. You can then lay your other diaper down and underneath her. You want to put the adhesive side on that back. That's the tricky part because sometimes the front and back can look very similar. Exactly. Which I just did. And then put this in the back. There you go. Alright. Perfect. Then you put this in between in legs. Centered it. So it's easy to move the self-adhesive over it. The nice thing about the adhesive sides is you can re-position the diaper if you haven't done it right the first time. And I notices if you can check if the diaper is dirty and if not you can reattached it so you're not wasting diapers unnecessarily. Looks like Paige is all done with her grooming and Paige can go out for a little ride or something. Thank you for being with us today. You're welcome. We'll see you next time on Babies Today.
