I'm Penelope Hsu in the kitchen with Family Fun. Grilled ham and cheese meets French toast in an extra crispy sweet and salty combo that's impossible to resist.
To make a Monte Cristo sandwich you'll need two slices of dense white bread, a half tablespoon of Dijon mustard, two slices of sandwich meat, two thin slices of Swiss or cheddar cheese, a half to one tablespoon of seedless raspberry jam, cooking oil, one large egg, a half tablespoon of milk, a pinch of salt, and æ tablespoons of butter. Spread mustard on one slice of bread, then add a slice of cheese, both slices of ham, and the last piece of cheese. Spread the jam on your other piece of bread, then press it, spread side down, onto the sandwich. Use a piece of paper towel to rub an unheated heavy skillet with a little bit of cooking oil. Place the skillet over moderate heat. As the skillet heats, wisp the egg, milk, and salt in a shallow bowl until frothy. Put the butter in the center of the pan. As it starts to melt hold the sandwich together firmly and briefly submerge one surface in the egg batter then submerge the other surface. Immediately place the sandwich in the pan before the butter browns. Grill the sandwich on the first side for about three minutes until golden brown. Then flip it with a spatula and grill it on the second side for another three minutes. Using a spatula, transfer the sandwich from the pan to a plate and slice it in half. You can serve it plain or drizzled with maple syrup.
