Chocolate cupcakes with a hint of nutmeg. Decorated with pink rolled fondant. Use watered down dye and a paint brush to write on them.

1/4 c vegetable oil
2 eggs
1/2 c apple sauce
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 c sugar
1 c flour
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 c cocoa
1/4 c milk
1/3 cup softened butter
1/3 cup light corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
1 lb sifted powdered sugar

Mixer, cupcake pan, rolling pin, heart shaped cookie cutter, paint brush, dye.

How to Make

  • Cupcakes
Preheat oven 350. Place 6 cupcake liners into a cupcake pan. Beat oil and eggs for 2 minutes. Add apple sauce, vanilla and sugar and beat 1 more minute.Whisk together flour, nutmeg, salt, baking soda and baking powder. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix just to combine. Fill pans about 3/4 of the way full.Bake 24 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

  • Fondant
In a large mixing bowl, blend the butter, corn syrup, vanilla and salt on medium speed with a paddle attachment until smooth and well-combined.Add the powdered sugar and mix on low speed, slowly turning up the speed to medium until well-combined. The mixture will stick together in the bottom of the bowl and be smooth to the touch. You can add the dye now and knead it through. You may want to wear gloves because the dye will get on your hands. Roll out thin and cut with a heart shaped cookie cutter. The heart should be a little bigger than the circumference of a cupcake.

  • When the cupcakes have completely cooled you can frost with some prepared jam and place the fondant hearts on top. Use your watered down dye and water to paint on the words.

  • Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your cupcake or sweet treat is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
