What I've Been Talking About

A Story About:

Learning to Read

July 05, 2007

When my oldest son began his trek into reading it was like pulling teeth. We would bribe him with his game boy, for every two minutes reading he would get one minute of video games. This seemed to work, but it was still very difficult to get him involved in his books. Shortly after he began the first grade the Harry Potter books started to become very popular. I, myself am not an avid reader, something I wish I could go back in time to change, but I wanted my oldest to read them, but I also wanted to make sure we could use them as teaching tools about make believe and what is real & what's not when it comes to magic. I was instantly hooked and it made my son excited that we shared the same love and excitment for the stories. It's a great way to bond with a child and you can also see a book in a whole new light when you get the opinion of someone younger than you.
