What I've Been Talking About
Learning to Read
My son is in the 2nd grade and we have been struggling with his reading since the 1st grade. This last semester is the first time the Teachers have decided to sit down and really discuss my concerns. He is finishing up the 2nd grade and is just now reaching 2nd grade reading level but when confronted in the past the teachers assured me he was right on task. Now instead of really wanting to help with the reading and change any of their teaching methods they want to diagnos him as ADD and put him on medication. I really don't want to do that until everthing else that can possibly be done is done first before I medicate him. Any suggestions? Did I mention that he was a 2 month early premature baby? Would this have anything to do with his reading development skills? I have been trying to find information on that but have been unsuccessful. Any information or advise will surely be appreciated. Thank you

Not Acceptable?Guest Book
Hi! I am going through the same thing with my daughter , she is in 2nd grade too. ( she is having trouble with reading and math !) I was told to have her evaluated by the school psychologist first to determin what to do or is needed from there. Teachers can not say if your child is ADD or ADHD . Do not do anything until your child is evaluated. Schools do not suggest it because they are the ones that have to pay for it. You do not have to pay. ( My one Aunt is a Professer at a Collage and has 7 kids so I asked her for help and she knows a lot about the school system ! ) If my daughter has to repeat 2nd grade that is fine , but I want what is best for her and if there is something it needs to be taken care of before. It is better to do it as soon as possible and the older they get the harder it will be on them. Thanks and now I am glad I am not the only one going through this. GOOD LUCK !!!!
