Sandusky, Ohio for Pre-Teens & Teens

There's no denying that Cedar Point Amusement Park is the major draw for lots of families, but don't miss out on Sandusky's lesser-known attractions, particularly the historical sites and museums. There's a lot of driving to get from place to place -- be sure to stock up on car-friendly activities.

Summer is definitely the big season for tourists, which means long lines and heavy traffic. Fortunately there is still a lot to do after Labor Day and in the spring. Call the visitor's bureau ahead of time to get information about the various festivals and special events that happen throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Business hours may change with the seasons, so phone ahead to make sure you'll get a chance to visit your top spots.

Sandusky weather follows the four seasons -- hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and transitioning from one to the other in the spring and fall. Milder days in the spring and fall can still get chilly because of the wind coming off the lake. You'll want to stick to shorts and T-shirts during the summer's 82-degree average and a heavy coat is in order in the winter. Most people drive to Sandusky -- it's only five hours form Chicago and about four from Pittsburgh. But if you're going to hop a plane you'll likely fly into the Toledo Express Airport (TOL) or one of the airports in Cleveland, each about an hour's drive from Sandusky. The Greyhound Bus Line also serves the area.

There's no public transportation system, so you'll need a car to get around -- especially if you'll want to head to some of the outlying small towns to take in their attractions, too.

There are many family-friendly events throughout the year, some of which don't get much attention outside of the local community, that may be reason enough to visit (depending on your family's interests).
