Denver, Colorado for Pre-Teens & Teens

Framed by the majestic Rocky Mountains -- which to some, are so striking they almost resemble a fake movie backdrop -- the mile-high city offers something for kids of every age group, and you, too. You'll find a bit of history, great shopping, kid-friendly museums, and plenty of ways to enjoy that near year-round sunshine outdoors.

Many tourists are surprised to learn that Denver garners more than 300 days of sunshine annually, which makes it great city to visit any time of year. That said, July and August are the best months to come, because of its often unpredictable mountain winter weather.

The climate in Denver is spectacular. Summer days are sunny, dry, and relatively mosquito-free, with frequent afternoon "sun showers" that quickly pass. Keep in mind that Denver sits at a high altitude; keep hydrated, and give your body time to adjust. Find out more about local weather.

Denver International Airport (DIA) is located well outside of downtown Denver, so renting a car is a good idea. Many hotels offer free shuttles and there are also paid shuttle services to the city, too. Denver is located off of two major interstates, I-70 and I-25, so driving there is easy. There are also Amtrak and Greyhound services.

Because many attractions can be found just outside Denver's city limits, it's a good idea to rent a car for at least some of your stay in Denver. The 16th Street Mall downtown offers a free shuttle with few wait times. RTD (Regional Transportation District) city bus and light rail fares are $1.50.

Denver and its surrounding communities host a variety of festivals and special events, though dates vary each year, so check official event websites or call the Chamber of Commerce for exact dates. This will allow you to plan your visit well in advance to either enjoy or avoid crowded, popular events.

Note: Avoid Denver the last week of August 2008, when the Democratic National Convention is expected to draw over 35,000 visitors to the city.
