Beartooth Scenic Drive Description

The Beartooth Highway is an incomparable scenic drive through two mountain ranges and three national forests, at the highest elevation of any road in the Rockies. There are plenty of stops (so whoever's driving won't have to miss the amazing scenery), and you might even catch a glimpse of wildlife in the distance or up close. Local residents include: black and grizzly bears, mountain goats (often spotted in the distance at high elevations), moose, elk, marmot, mule deer, and wolves.

Kid Tips

Babies: Babies will probably sleep right through this, but watch for irritability due to changes in altitude and offer fluids, nurse, or a pacifier to ease discomfort.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Little kids will enjoy the scenery and will be entertained by challenges to look for wildlife along the way.

School-Age Kids: Kids this age will enjoy the scenery, dramatic twists and turns, and will also be entertained by the search for wildlife along the way.

Pre-Teens & Teens: If unique scenery won't tempt your teens, they might want to skip this one or at least bring their iPods.

Planning Notes

  • Bring your camera. You will definitely want to capture the Beartooth's beauty.
  • Plan on slow going. The twists, turns, and elevation changes along the Beartooth Highway command respect. Build enough time into your schedule for a slow and steady trip.
  • Prepare for motion sickness. Bring ginger candies or medication if you or the kids are prone to getting carsick.
