Storm Point Day Hike Description
This is an easy 2-mile hike through varied terrain that ranges from forest to sandy beach to tall grasses. Kids will appreciate learning that the lake you pass at the beginning, Indian Pond (aka "Squaw Lake" on older maps), is a volcanic crater from an ancient eruption. The trail continues through grass and into forest that opens up to views of Yellowstone Lake. Listen for the high-pitched cheeps of yellow-bellied marmots that inhabit the area.
Kid Tips
Babies: Babies will likely nap the hike away in their carrier.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Kids who can walk should be able to do this hike; there are few elevation changes, though they may fatigue towards the end, so pack a little snack and plan on a break.
School-Age Kids: Kids will love this hike because there's so much to see and it makes them feel they've accomplished a great deal without hiking great distances.
Planning Notes
- Baby backpacks are a plus. Using one is probably your best option for this hike.
- Dress for high altitude. This means layers, hats, and sturdy, comfortable shoes. Sunscreen is a must. Bring plenty of water to drink, too.
- Bring windbreakers. They don't call it "Storm Point" for nothing, so consider bringing windproof jackets as part of your layers for the portion of the hike that goes along the lake.
