Canyon Village Description

Besides Old Faithful, no image of Yellowstone is more iconic than the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This is the site in Canyon Village where the golden hue of the riverbanks inspired the name "Yellowstone." In this area, you'll also find several souvenir shops with local items like huckleberry jam and syrup. The renovated Canyon Visitor Center features a new interactive "supervolcano" exhibit. Brief drives and hikes lead you to the area's various natural highlights along the canyon, including of the Upper and Lower Falls, Artist Point, and Inspiration Point. Hiking even a portion of the Canyon Rim Trail to Artist Point (3.7 miles from the Grandview parking lot to Artist Point) is worthwhile and gives you a more intimate look at the canyon than driving will. The trail is accessible from several points along both the North and South Rim Roads; check for trail maps at the Canyon Visitor Center.

Kid Tips

Babies: Unless you're determined to be a car-bound tourist, you'll want to wear your baby in a frontpack to most areas here. The shopping area near the Visitor Center is stroller-friendly.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Keep a close eye on little ones here, as in most areas of the park.

School-Age Kids: Kids this age will be wide-eyed over the supervolcano exhibit at the Visitor Center, and the majesty of the canyon and its waterfalls might wow them, too.

Planning Notes

  • Prepare for road closings. Due to recent road repair and construction, check with the Canyon Visitor Center for current road conditions.
  • Dress appropriately. The high altitude means dressing in layers, wearing a hat and sunscreen, and trail-ready shoes for rocky walking and hiking.
  • Bring plenty of water. Especially if you'll be hiking, hydration is a must at this altitude, especially on hot, dry summer days.
