Artist Paint Pots Description
This is a small, often overlooked section of Yellowstone where a little hiking pays off with big rewards. The hike, which begins on a boardwalk, takes visitors through partially burned lodgepole forest, providing great talking points about the massive 1998 fire that burned huge sections of the park. Kids can get a lesson in nature's processes as they marvel at the regrowth amidst all the charred stumps. You'll also encounter hot springs and mud pots.

Kid Tips
Babies: When the boardwalk portion of the trail ends, you'll have an uphill walk, so skip the stroller and carry your baby comfortably in a front pack.
School-Age Kids: The payoff of this hike is at the end, where kids will delight in getting up close and personal to bubbling mud pots whose "Bloop!" sounds will definitely amuse this age group.
Planning Notes
- Dress for hiking at a high altitude. Dress in layers (including a hat), wear comfortable, sturdy shoes, and don't skimp on sunscreen or water.
