Lower Geyser Basin Boardwalk Hike Description
The boardwalk trail around the Lower Geyser Basin takes families past a region of major thermal activity, from a 100-200-foot spurting geyser, to eerie mists, and gorgeous, beach-like paths. Also nearby is the more easily accessible Fountain Paint Pots -- hot springs that gurgle up through the ground and produce sounds and smells that will make kids (and grown-ups) giggle. Geysers and geothermal pools show the landscape in an ever-evolving state that will remind kids of scenes from dinosaur movies. Bonus: by the time the hike is over, they'll know the difference between a fumarole and a geyser.

Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Since the Lower Geyser Basin is one of the few geysers you can drive to, it's a doable sight for smaller kids. Take them on a walk around the Fountain Paint Pot Trail, which only takes about a half-hour to circle.
Planning Notes
- Bring appropriate footwear. Because of all the steam and geologic activity, the area tends to be muddy, even on some parts of the boardwalk. You may want to save your new white sneakers for another day.
