Mammoth Hot Springs Description

Smelly but intriguing. There aren't many places you can describe this way, but Mammoth Hot Springs is certainly one of them. (That rotten egg smell is from sulfur in the hot springs.) There's much to do here, from walking along paths beside fascinating terraced pools, to the Albright Visitor Center & Museum, featuring art and history of Yellowstone.

  • Hot Spring

  • Park

  • Hiking

  • History Museum

Kid Tips

Babies: Most of the areas here are stroller-friendly, but Yellowstone is best experienced with as much freedom as possible. You should consider wearing your baby in a sling or frontpack.

Pre-Teens & Teens: They'll be blown away by the springs and surrounding nature.

Planning Notes

  • Bring a picnic. There are two picnic areas at Mammoth, so be sure to take advantage of the scenery by bringing along lunch.
  • Dress for walking. Even though it's carefully plotted out with trails and boardwalks, you'll still want to wear comfortable shoes that you don't mind getting dirty on dusty, rocky trails.
  • Prepare for steep inclines. There are some serious hills to climb while touring the area.
