National Museum of Wildlife Art Description

Animal and art lovers of all ages will feel at home at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. A brightly lit, accessible collection of paintings, sculptures (look for "please touch" labels on creations kids can literally get their hands on), and photography, a visit here offers a visual feast for all ages. Even the outside of the building is beautiful; it was constructed to look like part of the already impressive natural landscape perched above the National Elk Refuge. Daily guided tours, activities just for kids, a well appointed gift shop, and a cafe with fresh food and outdoor seating round out the offerings.

Kid Tips

Babies: The elevators to the right of the main entrance provide access to the lower level, which houses the main exhibits.

School-Age Kids: Request a "Kids' Kit" from the main desk on the lower level, with animal track cards, questions about exhibits on display, and other goodies inside.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will appreciate the autonomy of the free guided audio tour, or you can ask a docent to lead a guided tour for the whole family.

Planning Notes

    • Online discount. Check the website for a coupon for $1 off admission (kids always get in free with a paid adult).
    • Free tours. Guided tours run daily at 1:30 p.m. (call ahead and see if a docent is available to provide a tour if you'll be there at a different time). Free audio tour gear is available at the main desk downstairs.
    • Daily craft projects. There's usually something fun happening in the Children's Discovery Gallery, like drop-in clay or paint projects.
    • Snack and shop. The great museum shop features cards and prints of popular exhibits, like the massive "The Chief" bison print by Robert Bateman. The Rising Sage Cafe has affordable eats with a kids' menu, too.
