Rock Climbing Lessons: Jackson Hole Mountain Guides Description

No matter where you go in Grand Teton National Park, it's rocky—the riverbeds, the trails, and the mountains themselves. This is rock climbing country, and the perfect place for a family rock climbing tutorial led by professionals who know the best places to climb. Before setting out, kids will be fitted for shoes, helmets, and harnesses, and receive a brief tutorial about the names of the specialized gear. A short drive from Jackson into Grand Teton National Park, and a short hike over large rocks and around boulders, and they're ready to reach for the clouds (or tops of boulders, if that's more their speed).

Kid Tips

Babies: Parents are welcome to bring infants along to cradle in the shade of a boulder while other family members climb. A baby sling or backpack carrier is a good idea, especially for the hike to the climbing site.

Toddlers & Pre-K: "Bouldering" might be more the speed for kids this age. Fortunately, you'll be climbing in an area dubbed "Boulder Town," and instructors help even the littlest climbers feel proud by scaling boulders that feel like mountains to them.

School-Age Kids: Have kids ask your guide if they can squeeze through a "cave" between two boulders in Boulder Town.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will probably welcome a bigger challenge, and the instructors are trained to take kids as far and high as they're comfortable going.

Planning Notes

    • Arrive on time. In order to beat the midday heat, arrive at the offices of Jackson Hole Mountain Guides on time so you can get fitted for climbing shoes, helmets, and harnesses with plenty of time for climbing in comfortable weather.
    • No restrooms. There are no restrooms at the rock climbing site, so be sure to go before you set off. Pack some toilet paper in case someone has to head off behind a boulder while you're climbing.
    • Bring snacks and water. Rock climbing is hard work and you'll have to hike over sizeable rocks on your way to and from the place you'll be learning the ropes.
