Swan Lake Hike Description
The Swan Lake hike is wonderful for kids of almost every age. With few changes in elevation and at three miles long, even young kids are able to make this trek. Even better: there are few places so close to civilization in the park where you're likely to see wildlife. Hike in the early morning or late afternoon for a chance to glimpse moose grazing on willow bushes in the tall grasses near Swan Lake, and keep an eye out for the resident trumpeter swans nesting out on the water.
Kid Tips
Babies: This is an easy hike to do with baby in a sturdy baby backpack.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Three miles is a decent hike, so know your kids' abilities before attempting this one with very young children.
School-Age Kids: This is a perfect hike for kids this age in terms of length and difficulty.
Pre-Teens & Teens: This is an easy hike with a big visual payoff if you go during the morning or late afternoon/dusk, when moose and mule deer are likely to be out grazing.
Planning Notes
- Hike with a ranger. Check your park newspaper, the Teewinot, for the schedule for ranger-led hikes at Swan Lake (usually early mornings). It's free, and the rangers know a great deal about the flora and fauna in the area, making the hike come to life as you enjoy the views.
