Cascade Canyon Hike Description

Hiking into Cascade Canyon is a customizable journey that pays off in spectacular views no matter how near or far you travel. After a brief ferry ride where the mountains appear to part before your eyes revealing Cascade Canyon, walk the (short, mostly uphill, half-mile) distance to photo-worthy Hidden Falls. You can also go a bit further (another half-mile on a much steeper trail) to 7,200 foot Inspiration Point (with views of Jenny Lake below), or push past the Point into Cascade Canyon. Hikers who hoof it about two miles past Inspiration Point will find a sweet spot at a curve in Cascade Creek that's perfect for a well-earned picnic lunch.

Kid Tips

Babies: This trail isn't stroller-accessible, and there are many stairs leading to Hidden Falls, so a sling or baby backpack is the way to go when toting tiny ones.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Younger kids will enjoy the climb to Hidden Falls. Parents who decide to press on to Inspiration Point will want to keep kids close when the trail gets steep and narrow.

School-Age Kids: Kids this age can bring their own day pack filled with snacks, water, and a trail map (pick up a free trail guide at any visitor center or purchase a guidebook to the Tetons).

Pre-Teens & Teens: This trail truly isn't the place for flip flops, so make sure older kids bring sturdy walking or hiking shoes or boots.

Planning Notes

    • Ferry or on foot. If you happen to miss the last ferry, a flat, two-mile trail winds around Jenny Lake between boat docks.
    • Prepare for rocks and dust. The trails in the Tetons are both rocky and gritty, so wear shoes that can withstand stepping over a sharp rock (or twenty).
    • Be noisy. This is one time you can encourage the kids to be chatty and make noise, because it might scare bears away. Pick up a "bear bell" at the Jenny Lake Visitor Center gift shop for kids to tie to their shoes or day packs.

Just the Facts

Hours: Jenny Lake ferries to the trailhead run every 15 minutes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
