Door County Maritime Museum Description
From shipbuilding to shipwrecks to storms and pirates, there's plenty to get boat-loving kids excited about at the Door County Maritime Museum. True maritime enthusiasts may get a kick out of the sleepier first floor, featuring a chronological history of shipping in the Great Lakes. But for most kids, the action starts on the second floor, where they can pretend to steer the steamship Elba (and toot her horn), learn to send a distress signal in Morse code, and escape a sinking "freighter" to a waiting lifeboat.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Unless you're dying to see it yourself, skip the first floor — little kids won't last long there — and head up to the second.
School-Age Kids: Kids this age will love a tour of the tugboat John Purves. The admission is extra, but it's worthwhile for the interested child.
Planning Notes
- Strollers welcome. The entire museum is wheelchair-friendly, so a stroller will fit just fine.
