Washington Island Ferry Description
A boat you can drive your car on? That's enough to capture a 5-year-old's attention as a long line of vehicles start making their way onto the Washington Island Ferry. The 30-minute trek takes passengers past three islands via the same passage Native Americans once paddled on their way from Door County to Washington Island, now a rustic vacation spot and home to just 700 people. Views are visible from the comfort of your car, but kids get much more excited about a trip to the open-air viewing deck.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Knowledge-seeking kids like learning about the deadly history of the waters between Door County and Washington Island via the "Crossing Death's Door" MP3. Download before your trip via the Web site.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Send big kids up to the viewing deck for a little independence. There's a heated indoor area in case of rain or chilly winds.
Planning Notes
- Bring a car. It's possible to visit Washington Island without one, but it's quite a trek from the ferry docks into town.
- Plan your exit time. The ferry has a limited schedule and you don't want to get stuck overnight.
