Boardwalk Along Barrier Beach Description
This guided walk along the beach, with the sound of the waves in your ears and the water of Lake Superior visible through the towering trees, is a must-do for families. As your kids clomp along the boardwalk, you'll pass red pines, white pines, white birch, and abundant lush vegetation. Interpretive placards explain why white birch bark at the edge of the lake does not rot and how to distinguish between pine trees. It's a beautiful, educational, and awe-inspiring walk that just may lead to an debate about who loves it more, the kids or the grown-ups.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Though they may not be as interested in the signage as older kids, this is still a perfect walk for kids ages 3 to 5.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The towering trees and views of the water through the forest make this a favorite spot for young adults.
Planning Notes
- Bring your bathing suit. A swim is the perfect way to cool off after the walk.
- Strollers are challenging. It's difficult to push a stroller along the boardwalk, but it's doable if a baby carrier isn't feasible.
- Go early or late. This is a popular walk. Consider going at dawn or dusk to avoid the crowds.
