Dreamcatcher Sailing Description
"They let you sail the boat!" said one 14-year-old who took a trip with Dreamcatcher Sailing. They offer two excursions daily in the summer, a five-hour trip to visit the islands or a shorter afternoon sail, both with a distinctly kid-friendly hands-on policy -- being at the helm (if you want to) is guaranteed. The longer trip (the Island Landing Excursion) includes visiting sandstone beaches, swimming (if it's warm enough), exploring remote islands in an inflatable dinghy, and a catered lunch. The shorter sail is both a boat adventure and a lesson in sailing -- Captain John teaches kids how to handle lines and trim sails during the 2.5 hours on the water.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Unless your child is used to spending hours on the water, even the 2.5-hour trip will be too long for toddlers.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Sailing one of Dreamcatcher's two boats (a 33-foot Peason or the 34-footTartan) will probably be the ultimate highlight of your vacation.
Planning Notes
- Wear layers. It may be chilly on the water even on the hottest days.
- Wear your swimsuit. Kids won't be able to resist diving into the shimmering waters of Lake Superior, so suit up before you leave.
- Make a reservation. This is one trip you'll have to reserve a day or two in advance.
- Full refunds for bad weather. The boats won't sail in dangerous weather conditions; you'll get your money back if the trip is canceled.
