Brownstone Trail Description
This trail, which begins downtown, is a 5-mile round-trip, level walk along the lake. You'll see views of Madeline Island, wild jack rabbits nibbling plants on the trail (if you're from the city, this is guaranteed to be the thrill of your youngster's life), and boats crossing in the channel. Don't be deterred by the beginning of the trail, which isn't very scenic -- soon it will emerge from Chequamegon Road and narrow into a single-person path that will be among the sweetest nature trails you've experienced.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Try this trail even if your child is not much of a hiker. Kids love that they can pick apples from trees right on the trail, spot wildlife (hummingbirds, jack rabbits, and maybe even a bear from afar), cross a little footbridge, and enjoy "hiking" on a flat surface.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Port Superior Marina is about 2.5 miles from the trail ahead (at the turn-around point). Older kids will enjoy dining at the little restaurant and meandering along the marina, looking at boats and exploring the docks and piers.
Planning Notes
- Handicap and stroller accessible. The first 1.5 miles of the trail is hard-packed cinder, suitable for pushing a stroller, biking with a trailer or tag-along, or guiding a wheelchair.
- Stay on the trail. Private landowners have made their footpaths available to all trail users. The Bayfield Regional Conservancy asks that users be respectful of private property.
- Bring your bikes. Since the trail is level, it's a perfect one on which to bike.
