Madeline Island Museum Description
Comprised of four historic buildings and an extensive outdoor area, this museum provides a fascinating glimpse of Native American and pioneer cultures, and of the history of Madeline Island and the Apostle Islands in general. The museum's impressive display of hand-crafted model wooden ships, cornhusk dolls with names like "Protruding Tongue Face Mask Dancer," an exhibit on shipwrecks, a kids' corner with furs to touch, weaving and art activities, and two rooms devoted entirely to 19th-century antiques bring history alive. It's one of the best reasons to head indoors while you're on Madeline Island.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Young kids will enjoy the kids' corner (their older siblings will, too). Plan to spend a good portion of your visit there.
School-Age Kids: An interactive multimedia shipwreck display, as well as information and displays, makes this museum a wonder for school-age children, especially those who have read books like "Little House in the Big Woods" about pioneer life.
Planning Notes
- Don't bring food or drinks. No food or drinks are allowed anywhere in the museum, but there's a drinking fountain by the restrooms near the entrance.
- Turn on the lighthouse light. A docent will turn on the old light from a lighthouse at your request.
- Skip the documentary. The film "La Pointe, Lake Superior" plays hourly throughout the day. If you're traveling with kids under 15, they probably won't enjoy it.
