Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Description
Start your exploration of the Apostle Islands here, where friendly park rangers give visitors up-to-the-minute weather and wildlife information (some islands may be closed to human visitors because of bear activity, for example), maps, and guide books to the area. Watch the 20-minute video, "On the Edge of Gichigami: Voices of the Apostle Islands," and enjoy the interactive computer displays, photos of wildlife, and the still-working light from an old lighthouse.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Even children as young as 4 will enjoy participating in the Junior Ranger Program, which includes an activity book and some one-on-one time with a ranger.
Pre-Teens & Teens: If you're planning to kayak to the sea caves with older children, the rangers here can give you advice and suggestions.
Planning Notes
- Stop back often. Make it your first stop, and check back frequently. Rangers advise checking weather and water conditions before exploring the islands each day.
- Don't skip the documentary. It's a nice introduction to the islands, and a film your kids will enjoy, as well. The video is played upon request.
