Iron Bridge and Nature Trail Description
With little wooden bridges and a path that meanders under the old iron bridge and along a gurgling creek, this half-mile loop trail is just right for small legs. "Totally awesome! But it wasn't long enough," cried one 4-year-old after the trail gave him a taste for hiking. Benches throughout the walk are well placed for resting when small legs get tired. Shaded by stately maple and pine trees, it's a perfect walk for a hot day in Bayfield.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Even young toddlers will love this trail, which is short enough for new walkers to do on their own.
School-Age Kids: For kids who can read, large wood-framed placards explain the history of the iron bridge and the flood of 1942.
Planning Notes
- Visit the bridge from the top. After you walk under it, go up the street and stand on the 1912 iron bridge and look down so you can see where you were.
- Walk to the trail. Though there is free parking across from the trail head, the trail is just two blocks from downtown.
- Don't bring a stroller. The path is not paved.
- Go in the afternoon. Combine the short hike with a trip to the public library, which isn't open in the morning.
