Candy Shoppe Description

"You gain five pounds just walking through the door!" laughs one Bayfielder. You can't pass this tiny, bustling, much-loved shop without stopping in -- many of the confections are baked on-site, and the delicious smells of bread and waffle cones that waft outside is enough to entice anyone inside. Kids can watch bakers decorate wine bread (a Croatian dessert that is the shop's specialty) and shape waffle cones. Choose from dozens of flavors of salt water taffy; try the homemade candies, cookies, and fudge; or indulge in some delicious Wisconsin Cedar Crest ice cream.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Instead of ice cream, your youngster might want to choose from the unusual selection of candy (gold mining gum, blue dolphin chews, dipsticks, and the like) or homemade treats (chocolate-dipped Oreo cookies are a huge hit).

Pre-Teens & Teens: The homemade waffle cones and generous ice cream portions are just right for ravenous preteens and teens.

Planning Notes

  • Order wine bread in advance. Don't miss the opportunity to try the wine bread, which is made with cream cheese and fruit, and can be eaten as a morning pastry or dessert. Extra loaves are sometimes available, but it's best to order one in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon.
  • Expect crowds. There's a constant throng of locals and tourists ordering delicious treats. If your kids are claustrophobic or don't like crowds, have them wait outside.
  • Expect to come back. This is one place your family will be frequenting more than once during your visit to the Apostle Islands.
