Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum Description

Music buffs will love the artifacts celebrating Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Nirvana, and more. But the real appeal is in the interactive exhibits. At the Spin Kids Station, kids can be rock stars and play new instruments. In the Sound Lab, kids and their parents can play guitars and drums, experiment with studio techniques, and even record a mini-CD. The Science Fiction Museum is in a room on the second floor. Sci-fi fans will enjoy the exhibits, and admission is free once you're in the EMP.

Kid Tips

Babies: It's a music museum so it can get noisy, but there are several galleries that are on the quiet side.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The Spin Kids Station, where they can play instruments and even command their own starship, will be a hit.

School-Age Kids: Interactive exhibits are a better bet than the galleries. Star Wars fans will probably enjoy the Science Fiction Museum.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Whether into pop, rock, country, hip-hop, funk, or punk, teens will love playing on a stage in front of a virtual stadium full of screaming fans, stepping into the Sound Lab to record a song in the private recording studio, and going behind the music to see how hits are produced.

Planning Notes

  • Plan ahead. Go before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m., when the museum is least crowded.
  • Ditch the bags. The EMP/SFM doesn't allow bags, backpacks, computer bags or umbrellas in galleries. Purses may be inspected, and purses larger than 16 inches aren't allowed.
  • Leave the camera behind. No photography is allowed in the galleries.
  • The Science Fiction Museum is part of EMP. It doesn't require separate admission.
  • Check online for special events. The EMP/SFM frequently offers concerts and other special events; check the Website for the latest.
