Woodland Park Zoo Description

Woodland Park Zoo is a pioneer among naturalistic zoos, with animals living in natural settings and habitats rather than cages. Extra space for the animals means extra walking for the humans, so pick up a trail map at the entrance. When kids aren't petting or looking at animals, they'll have a blast playing in the fun-filled indoor Zoomazium or the outdoor Habitat Discovery Loop. When it's time to eat, the Rain Forest Food Pavilion offers a range of earth-friendly and kid-friendly options, plus indoor and outdoor seating.

Kid Tips

Babies: Strollers are available for rent at all entrances. The Zoomazium has a small area set aside for crawlers and early walkers.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Young kids will have a blast climbing and sliding at the Zoomazium, or crawling on a giant spider web and exploring caves at the Habitat Discovery Loop. The Family Farm is popular with kids because they can touch goats, rabbits, and sheep.

School-Age Kids: Kids will enjoy the Habitat Discovery Loop and riding on the Historic Carousel. The orangutans and gorillas are hugely popular with this set, as is hand-feeding the small parrots.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids and young adults often enjoy the elephants, since the elephant keepers are also part of the demonstrations.

Planning Notes

  • Go in the morning. You’ll catch the late morning penguin and piranha feedings, and you’ll score a parking space (the lot fills up quickly).
  • Or, go in the afternoon to avoid crowds. The least crowded time to visit the zoo is right after lunch.
  • Check the Website for special events. Woodland Park Zoo is the site of a popular summer concert series, plus many other special events throughout the year.
