Town of Friday Harbor Description
Most San Juan Island vacations begin and end in Friday Harbor, courtesy of the ferry dock. It's a fun place to wait if you've just arrived and your hotel or campsite isn't quite ready, or if you're leaving and need to park early in the ferry lanes. Even the smallest children will have an easy time walking to the toy store, the bookstore, the Whale Museum, or the ice cream shop. Several excellent restaurants overlook the harbor, and shopping for last-minute souvenirs doesn't get any easier.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The Friday Harbor Ice Cream Company offers 72 flavors, and is located right next to the ferry dock. Nearby benches offer prime seats for people watching.
School-Age Kids: Head straight to the Whale Museum, then give kids $5 and let them shop at the Toy Box, a large and well-stocked toy store on Front Street.
Pre-Teens & Teens: A small shopping area next to the ferry building has several souvenir shops, offering everything from inexpensive T-shirts to high-end crafted jewelry.
Planning Notes
- Tour Friday Harbor just before you leave the island. It's always a good idea to arrive early for the ferry -- park your car in the ferry lanes and set out on foot. For an off-the-beaten path activity, seek out the local drumming group, which usually gets together in a small park near the waterfront.
- Wear good walking shoes. You'll probably be on foot for a couple of hours, and the main road leading from the harbor is a slight hill.
- Carry cash. A few of the local stores accept only cash or local checks.
