Roche Harbor Village Description

Roche Harbor is a popular jumping-off point for hiking, kayaking, and whale-watching, but there's so much to do here it's worth visiting just to explore the historical gardens, trails, and buildings, and then enjoy unique dining and shopping. Kids and nostalgic grown-ups will get a charge out of the old-fashioned candy at the Roche Harbor Sweet Shoppe. During summer, outdoor artists display paintings, handmade jewelry, and other crafts in booths. The beach is just a short walk away, and there's plenty of open green space for kids to burn off a little steam.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: On hot summer days, bring younger kids to the village swimming pool, which has a wading pool for the smallest splashers. A nearby play area includes fun climbing and sliding structures.

School-Age Kids: Stop by the lobby of the historic Haro Hotel to see an exhibit about the history of the village. Don't miss President Theodore Roosevelt's signature in the guest log.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Introduce the dramatically inclined to Island Stage Left, the island's only professional theater company, and their annual production of "Shakespeare Under the Stars" at Roche Harbor's Outdoor Stage.

Planning Notes

  • Make reservations for dinner at McMillins Dining Room. Dining here gives you a primo view of the Roche Harbor Colors Ceremony, held each night during summer at sunset. Kids and grown-ups alike will enjoy seeing the flags of Great Britain, Canada, and the U.S. as they are lowered to the music of the national anthems and Taps. A thrilling cannon salute caps the evening. "Small plates" are a refreshing and nutritious change from standard kids' menu fare. Reservations are strongly recommended (call 360-378-5757).
