Jakle's Lagoon Hike Description
Take a short hike (less than a mile) under a thick canopy of hemlock, cedar, and fir to Jakle's Lagoon, where kids can clamber over driftwood, look for crabs on the ocean front, and try to balance on logs without getting their feet wet in the ankle-deep lagoon. Older kids will enjoy the more aggressive hike to the lagoon along the Mt. Finlayson Loop -- three short miles takes you through lush forest, grass prairies, and windy ridges overlooking the ocean and the distant Olympic Mountains, and you still get to play in the lagoon.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Help younger kids build small stone cairns -- piles of stones in interesting shapes and configurations that have been used for millennia as landmarks and trail markers.
School-Age Kids: Challenge kids to find and use a good walking stick. A bike rack near the trailhead often contains walking sticks that other hikers have left behind; use one of these or find a shorter, kid-sized one and then leave it for someone else.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Let older kids hike ahead and explore the lagoon on their own. The trail is wide and well-marked.
Planning Notes
- Wear good hiking shoes. The trail is well-maintained but steep in parts, and the areas between trail and beach can be narrow and uneven.
- Use the restrooms at the American Camp visitor center. There are no facilities at the trailhead or in the lagoon.
