Lime Kiln Point Description
This windswept, rocky park is 36 acres of spectacular beauty, surrounded by another 200 acres of equally majestic public land. Climb among the rocks, listen to the lighthouse hydrophone for underwater sounds (including whale songs if you're lucky), scan the ocean for porpoises and whales, and look to the sky for bald eagles and rare pileated woodpeckers (bring binoculars). Volunteers from the Whale Museum are often on hand to show people what to look for. Don't miss the Limekiln Interpretive Center, where you can learn more about killer whales, see a life-size model of a whale's dorsal fin, and even buy a small souvenir.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Lighthouse tours are scheduled, but it's worth peeking in the door for an ad hoc visit. Volunteers are happy to chat with visitors and let kids listen to recordings of whale songs.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Hand over the binoculars. Older kids will particularly enjoy scanning the horizon for killer whales and gazing out to sea.
Planning Notes
- Bring a sweatshirt. No matter how hot it is further inland, it's guaranteed to be cooler and breezier along the coast.
- Wear good walking shoes. Parts of the trails are a bit steep and the rocks can be slippery.
- Bring a picnic. The park has 12 picnic tables, plenty of grassy areas, and large, flat rocks that are perfect for taking a break.
- Use the restrooms near the Interpretive Center at the beginning of the trail. There aren't any restrooms once you pass this point.
