Dance, our Dearest Diversion Description
Dance was the most acceptable and expected of all social interaction in the eighteenth century; one diarist wrote "Virginians will dance or die," which shows just how seriously the art of dance was to the people of the day. The candlelit capitol building is the backdrop for an evening of dance; visitors first watch the elegantly dressed interpreters gracefully move across the dance floor, then young visiting ladies and gentlemen -- and their elders -- learn the most popular dance moves of the day.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Skip this program. The dance instruction is too advanced for the youngest kids, and they'll tire quickly of watching.
School-Age Kids: The best audience for this program, as children in this age range -- including the boys -- will be more apt to participate. Practice curtsey and bowing beforehand.
Planning Notes
- Buy tickets early. Get your tickets for the dance as soon as travel dates are set (800-447-8679), as it sells out well in advance.
- Dress up. If there's anywhere for your child to wear an eighteenth century costume, this is it. If you don't have one hanging in your home closet, pick up one at Mary Dickinson's shop or rent a dress from the Market Square stalls.
