Revolutionary City Description

From conversations with George Washington and Patrick Henry to eavesdropping on a group of slaves as they ponder their future in a new country, issues of the day are brought to life through the vignettes acted out by the costumed interpreters. Part of the fun for kids is being drawn into the scenes and becoming active participants -- shouting "huzzah!" or hissing to show displeasure is great fun, as is chatting with the interpreters scattered throughout the crowd to further bring children into the action.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Families with strollers and the smallest children should take care to arrive early to ensure a good view of the action. In some cases, a good spot can be difficult to secure as the location of a vignette may be in front of a tavern or on the sidewalk -- don't worry, most folks let the little ones get in front.

School-Age Kids: Be sure to visit Get Revved! prior to the events for a thorough preview from a historical character. It helps get kids interested, and serves as a primer for the whole family.

Planning Notes

  • Check, please. Check the daily schedule for the exact time and locations for programming. This program is included with Colonial Williamsburg admission.
  • Close up. For events near the Governor's Palace, capitol, and other buildings, get as close to the buildings as possible -- that's where the best view is, and you'll be able to hear the interpreters better.
