Powell House Description

There's something different happening every day at the Powell's, home to Mr. Powell (an undertaker) and his family. Don't expect anything creepy, though -- Mr. Powell is simply a businessman, not one who deals with corpses. Kids dive into the experience here, helping change the bedding, cooking up a meal in the kitchen (in a separate building, no less), feeding the chickens, carrying firewood, mashing vegetables, and cutting cookies alongside costumed family members -- all daily chores that can be quite fun and surprisingly entertaining when it's not your house.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: While everything can be handled in the Powell home, young kids will not find much to keep them engaged inside but will be endlessly fascinated by the chickens outside.

Pre-Teens & Teens: While young adults might be interested in some of the more seemingly mundane matters -- the spread for dinner or the fact that the kitchen is in a different building -- they'll find the most joy in playing along with their younger siblings.

Planning Notes

  • Play along. Kids of every age like it when the folks play along, whether in the kitchen using a mortar and pestle or chasing the hoop with a stick in the yard.
  • Encourage rotation. Powell House can become crowded with children wanting to play and work alongside the interpreters, so encourage your child to rotate from room to room frequently.
  • Requires Colonial Williamsburg admission. This activity is included as part of the admission fee.
