Chippokes Plantation State Pk Description

One of the oldest continuously working farms in the United States, this plantation on the James River offers living history, beautiful gardens, and two manor houses to explore in addition to more standard state park activities like hiking and biking trails and picnic areas. Tours of the farm and farming museum include fascinating information about historic farming, while manor tours of the two stately homes -- one right on the river and the other, more formal home that's further inland -- are offered from April to October.

Kid Tips

Babies: A half-mile of the almost four-mile walking trail is paved for strollers and wheelchairs.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Play I-spy along the riverbank for shells and shark's teeth.

School-Age Kids: The wickedly sharp, antique farming implements in the museum will enrapture school-aged boys.

Planning Notes

  • Park it. The kids can run free in the park, which includes plenty of James River shoreline to explore.
  • Holiday houses. Both of the plantation homes are open during the holiday season, decked out in Victorian holiday glamour.
  • Ferry over. The free Jamestown-Scotland Ferry carries cars over to the Surry side of the area every 30 minutes.
