Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Description
Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this wildlife refuge as you drive (or better yet, walk or bike) through the gates. The famous Chincoteague ponies are here, but there's so much more to see and do, including 15 miles of hiking and biking trails (the longest trail is a 3.2 mile wildlife loop and the shortest leads to the Assateague Lighthouse); surf fishing; crabbing; horseback riding; shell collecting; bird watching; and vast Toms Cove beach, with soft sand that's perfect for sandcastle building, Frisbee throwing, or just relaxing on between swims in the Atlantic.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: A trip to Chincoteague would not be complete without spying the famous ponies. To increase your chances, visit early in the summer before the Pony Penning. Good spots for pony sightings year-round include the observation platforms along Beach Road and the Woodland Trail.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Biking through the refuge is a must-do. The closest bike rental shop to the refuge is the Bike Depot, adjacent to the Refuge Inn at 7058 Maddox Ave.
Planning Notes
- Pony Penning. Foals of the wild ponies that made Chincoteague famous are sold at auction on the last Wednesday and Thursday of July. Depending on when you visit the refuge and the movements of the herds, you may see the ponies from afar or relatively up-close.
- Take a tour. Wildlife and Assateague Lighthouse tours are offered by the Chincoteague Natural History Association from March to November. For details, call 757-336-3696 or visit the Chincoteague Refuge Visitor Center.
- No pets allowed. Pets are prohibited in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Assateague State Park, the area north of the state park, and in back-country campsites -- even in cars.
- A birders paradise. The area is home to a variety of herons, egrets, terns, sandpipers, warblers, shorebirds, and peregrine falcons. Pick up a bird checklist at any of the island's visitor centers.
- Abundant poison ivy. Stick to refuge trails to avoid contact.
