Nauticus Description

Climb aboard the Battleship Wisconsin, one of the largest and last battleships built by the U.S. Navy, and kids' imaginations will run wild as they explore the various levels of its upper deck (the inside is off-limits), look in on the sleeping quarters, "steer" the mammoth boat, and picture themselves wearing one of the Navy uniforms on display in the adjacent museum -- all before paying admission. Once inside Nauticus, the discovery continues with interactive exhibits, touch tanks (a visit to the Shark Petting Lagoon is an absolute must-do), computer games, a flight simulator, and much more.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Little ones will love the Travelling Tidepool (tailored to kids younger than 5), offered Tuesday through Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the third-floor touchtank.

School-Age Kids: Kids this age will be fascinated by the submersible Clelia, with its 9-foot arm they can use to dig "artifacts" out of a giant sand pit.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Video game lovers will embrace the challenge offered by the computer games and simulators -- navigating the Wisconsin through the Chesapeake Bay is harder than you'd think.

Planning Notes

  • Year-round camps. Nauticus offers a number of day camps throughout the year, all with a scientific focus that's age-appropriate and with an emphasis on fun.
  • Check the schedule. Special events, feedings, presentations, films, and workshops are offered throughout the day. Ask for a listing of the day's events when you arrive, or check the website in advance.
  • See the sea in high definition. "The Living Sea" is a fascinating look at ocean life. At 45 minutes, it may be too long for the youngest kids, but not long enough for those interested in sea life and the ocean.
