Chesapeake Maritime Museum Description

A treasure for those interested in boats, this museum holds the interest of less nautical-minded families, as well. Spread throughout a small marina, the museum campus includes a working ship-building area (where kids can sign up to be a builder for a day), a large lighthouse (completely restored and 100 percent accessible: kids are invited to open the kitchen cupboards, peek into dresser drawers, and ring the fog bell), an oyster house and boat (where kids can climb down into the galley and imagine themselves as working watermen), and more.

Kid Tips

Babies: The walkways between the buildings are gravel, and not conducive to strollers.

School-Age Kids: The At Play on the Bay building, with its engaging exhibits on canoe camping, family vacations on the Chesapeake Bay in the 19th century, and a 1950s tackle shop, will appeal to kids in this age range.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Make the vacation truly memorable by signing older kids up for one of the museum's summer weeklong sailing courses, with basic to advanced instruction. Weekend sailing courses are also available.

Planning Notes

  • All-day admission. There's no cafe or picnic tables on-site, but the price of admission allows for in-and-out privileges. When hunger strikes, head next door to the Crab Claw for crab picking and other delights from the sea, or walk into quaint St. Michael's for lunch.
  • Free for kids 5 and younger. The child rate of $6 applies to kids 6 to 17.
  • Plan your visit. The museum is spread over 18 acres. Use the free campus map to decide which exhibits will hold the most interest for your kids.
