Oriole Park at Camden Yards Tour Description
Even nonbaseball fans will be entranced by this behind-the-scenes and on-the-field tour of famed Orioles Park at Camden Yards; baseball fans will be absolutely enthralled. The tour starts outside the ballpark, goes up to the club and luxury-box level, and winds its way down through the press room and finally to the field itself, with the tour guide telling fascinating stories and providing interesting insights along the way. Anyone who's ever dreamed of playing in the big leagues will be thrilled by the tour finale: sitting in the Orioles dugout. Be sure to check out our other Baltimore vacation ideas.
Kid Tips
Babies: Officially strollers are allowed on the tour, and ramps and elevators accommodate them when moving between floors. Elevator space is tight, however. Leave your stroller behind and bring a baby carrier if possible.
School-Age Kids: Baseball fans will love every second of this tour. The guides clearly love the game and the Orioles, and encourage questions throughout.
Planning Notes
- Tour on a nongame day. The tour schedule is limited on game days, and tours that end close to game-time don't get to go down onto the field.
- No open bathrooms inside the stadium. Utilize the ones just outside the Orioles store beforehand, where the tour commences.
- Game tickets not included. If you don't have plans to attend a game before the tour, you'll want to afterward. Keep that in mind when scheduling your tour.
- All about the Babe. Fans of Babe Ruth will learn all about this Baltimore-born baseball hero (his birthplace is just two blocks from the stadium), including how he really got his nickname (hint: it wasn't from the candy bar).
- Something for everyone. The tour includes information about the architecture of the building, the area's railroad history (the ballpark is built on the grounds of the former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad), insights into how television and print journalists report from games, how the warning track is made from recycled tires, and much more.
- Determined woman. Orioles fans have Janet Marie Smith to thank for the old-time design of the ballpark. An architect and baseball fan, she convinced the owners that a ballpark with a historic design could include modern conveniences. The Orioles hired her even though she had no hands-on design experience, and she served as the liaison among the city, the team, and the architects for the project, influencing design decisions large and small.
