Magan's Bay Beach Description
This is the perfect beach for young children. There's virtually no tide, the slope into the water is very gentle, and it's the only beach on St. Thomas and St. John that features lifeguards. Older kids will like its size (nearly a mile long), which enables them to explore and you to find privacy if you choose. Plenty of sea grape trees supply shade and ample picnic tables are available for eating. A full-service concession/restaurant offers beach waiters, hot lunches, chair rentals, lockers, and bathrooms with showers.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: There are usually enough small children on the beach that little ones will pal up.
Planning Notes
- Be strategic. Find a bathroom building (there are three tucked behind the road) and situate yourself near it. It's convenient not just for the obvious, but also to use the showers and rinse off the salt water.
- Privacy vs. convenience: you choose. The closer to the concession, the less hassle when kids need an ice cream ... but the busier the beach. Even on busy days, however, you can find good beach space.
- Not the best snorkeling. Snorkel gear is available for rent, but save that for St. John. You might want to rent a kayak, though.
- Leave when the lifeguards do. It's open later, but don't go after sundown.
