Virgin Islands Ecotours Description

This is more than a sensational family excursion -- it's an environmental adventure that teaches and delights. First, there's kayaking, then hermit-crab racing on a deserted island (whoops of delight all around), followed by a treasure hunt, and finally a chance to get splashed by a rare geologic blowhole. You'll snorkel alongside mangrove roots (no experience necessary) featuring exotic fish and sometimes a barracuda named Barry. (He's friendly!) Kids actually enjoy the guide's pop quiz once back at base.

Kid Tips

Babies: If your only child is a baby, save this for later. VI Ecotours does have life jackets for children as young as six months old, however. Also, you'll be "beached" during the snorkel -- not so terrible.

School-Age Kids: The excursion is best for second graders and up. By that age, kids can snorkel and enjoy the entire experience.

Planning Notes

  • Reserve a spot. Reservations almost always necessary, especially in season.
  • Wear a bathing suit. Leave a change of clothes at base.
  • Cover your feet. Wear something substantial that can get wet. Flip-flops are ok, but sandals with straps will have better staying power during the hike.
  • Bring a snack. Water and chocolate bars are provided along the way (both totally hit the spot), but you'll be hungry at the end for something light. (Snacks can be purchased at base.)
  • Buy the CD. The guides take amazing action photos, and you can purchase a CD for around $45. It's worth it.
  • Bring extra money. Tipping is expected.
