Rent whatever you need from Umiak Outfitters, from kayaks to whitewater boats to performance sleds (one style requires you to ride on your knees). Pair your equipment with one of Umiak's unique tours: the River and Spirits kayaking trip, which offers parents wine tasting at a local winery and ice cream for the kids; the fondue dinner tour, which combines snowshoeing with the dipping (crusty bread and Vermont cheese) that little ones love; and the Moonlight Cabin snowshoeing tour, offering hot cider, snacks, and stargazing. These adventures will show you a side of Stowe that neither you, nor the kids, will soon forget.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Short attention span? Opt for the snowshoe tour on the grounds of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory, and after a perfectly-timed 30-minute outing the kids can tour the facility and try a sample. (Saturday and Sunday, every hour on the hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Planning Notes
- Know your skill level. The Lamoille River is great for novices (ages 5 and up), but the Winooski River can provide more of a challenge (white water rapids and plenty of wildlife) for older kids and those used to being on the water.
- Add a view. If you don't need instruction, consider renting your canoe at the retail outlet and then driving through Smuggler's Notch to the outpost on the Lamoille River. The combination of winding roads and gorgeous vistas (particularly in the fall) will take your breath away.
