Trapp Family Lodge Description

Remember in the "Sound of Music" when the Von Trapp family headed over the mountains to freedom? Turns out that after a stop in Italy, they moved to Stowe. Their home (on 2,400 acres) is now a lodge that celebrates music and family with classical concerts, forest walks, gardens to meander through, delicious food, and a comfy place to rest your head.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Trying to introduce your young ones to the joys of music? Pick a seat on the outskirts of the lawn and pack a ball. When little ones get a bit restless, head across the street to the local park.

School-Age Kids: Beware of the recorders for sale in the gift shop. Maria ran a music school at the lodge before it became a hotel. They're beautiful instruments, but will drive you crazy on a long ride home.

Planning Notes

  • Lodging has its privileges. Anyone can visit the gift shop, the restaurants, or the grounds, but if you want to ooh and ahh at the family photos in the main lodge, you may need to check in.
  • Make time for sweets. The small bakery in the lower level of the Austrian Tea Room restaurant is only open in the mornings (daily from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) and offers to-die-for pastries perfect for an early-morning coffee break or a picnic (prices start at about $2).
  • These hills are alive with the sound of music. The Trapp Family Lodge Concert Meadow offers seasonal Sunday concerts by Stowe Performing Arts and Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Bring your own blanket or low-back lawn chair.

Just the Facts

Hours: Open year-round. Grounds are freely accessible during daylight hours and in the evenings during concerts.
