West Rim Trail to Angel's Landing Description
Not for the faint of heart or for anyone afraid of heights, the West Rim Trail to Angels Landing is one of the highlights of Zion National Park. A steep ascent of 2.5 miles climbs 1,488 feet in altitude and leads you to incredible views of the canyon, passing through an area that has so many winding, climbing switchbacks it's called Walter's Wiggles. The sharp rise at the end has chains for security (but is terrifying nonetheless) and shouldn't be hazarded with small children. But the effort is worth it—you'll see why when you get to the top.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: This hike is for older kids only, and those who aren't afraid of heights or unnerved by steep cliffs.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Even "fearless" teens might refuse to look at the heavenly panoramic views that give this spot its name.
Planning Notes
- Check the weather. Rangers advise skipping this hike if thunderstorms are forecasted or there's inclement weather of any kind.
- Go in the morning. This hike will take about 4 hours round-trip (hiking at a steady pace), and you don't want to start it at mid-day.
