Mill Creek Canyon Description
One of the primary reasons to visit Utah is to see and experience its amazing topography, but visitors who come only to ski or explore Salt Lake City miss out. That's where Mill Creek Canyon comes in—at an elevation of more than 6,000 feet with cascading water, gorgeous views, lush vegetation, and fantastic rock formations throughout, Mill Creek Canyon is one of the most popular picnic, hike, mountain bike, and fishing destinations for the Salt Lake area. An array of wildlife awaits, including moose and elk (if you're lucky enough to spot them), and fairy-sized wild flowers in the springtime.
Kid Tips
Babies: Parents looking for an easy hike can try the Pipeline Trail, which has room to walk together (and talk while the baby babbles from the backpack) and three access points from the road.
School-Age Kids: With its mild ascent, the four-mile hike to Dog Lake is ideal for this age group. Allow for about four hours round-trip, with time for a peaceful rest at the small lake.
Planning Notes
- Bring the pooch (and the scooper). Dogs are allowed on odd numbered days.
- Pay when you leave. Park officials collect the $2.25 per car fee as you exit the canyon.
- Want a spot that's off the beaten path? Neff's Canyon is a beautiful, secluded area (the trail head is at the top of Park View Terrace Drive) that has many fewer visitors than Mill Creek.
