Antelope Island State Park Description
Want to visit the Great Salt Lake? Go to Antelope Island, where you can walk across the crunchy, salty sand with brine flies buzzing at your feet and can put your tootsies in the sea (which is so salty that you become buoyant, an experience your kids will love and you shouldn't miss). From your car or a trail you can spy the resident pronghorn antelope and over 500 buffalo. There's also an extensive Visitor's Center, a small outdoor concession stand (serving buffalo burgers, explain that to the kids...), and an original Pioneer ranch.
Kid Tips
Babies: The water is shallow, warm, and buoyant— a baby's paradise.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Little ones will love splashing around in the lake and will also enjoy the many displays at the Visitor's Center.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Boat and horse rentals are available for those who want to move faster, but advanced reservations are required. For boats, call Wildlife Safari Tours at (801) 726-0850. For horseback tours, contact R & G Horse and Wagon Rides at (801) 782-4946 or (888) 878-8002.
Planning Notes
- Bring a sun hat and sunscreen. There are no trees on the island and the sun is brutal.
- Wear water shoes on the beach. The sand is sharp and will burn your feet (we learned this the hard way).
- Bring water. If you plan to hike, make sure you have enough water with you.
